GS1 Barcodes: What You Actually Need

(& Why It Matters)

If you’re a new or growing CPG brand, barcodes aren’t just a technical requirement — they’re part of your long-term growth and retail readiness. As a GS1 Partner, I help brands choose the right path from the start, so you don’t end up relabeling products, fixing data issues, or getting blocked by retailers later.

GS1 US GTIN (Single Barcode Option)
A single GS1 US GTIN is designed as a starter option for microbusinesses that want to list one or a few products quickly.

  • Best for very small brands or early test launches
  • Licensed directly from GS1 US
  • $30 one-time fee
  • No annual renewal

This can work for early-stage use cases — but it’s important to understand its limitations as your brand grows.

GS1 Company Prefix (Built for Scale)
A GS1 Company Prefix is the right choice for brands planning to grow, expand SKUs, or sell across multiple channels.

Your company prefix:

  • Allows you to create multiple barcodes at once
  • Uniquely identifies your company as the brand owner
  • Supports mixed cases, case packs, pallets, coupons, and locations
  • Scales with new products, packaging levels, and retail requirements

The initial cost is your GS1 US membership, based on how many barcodes you need. After that, there’s an annual renewal fee to maintain ownership and use of your prefix and barcodes.

If you’re serious about retail, wholesale, or long-term distribution, this is almost always the correct path.

Why GS1 Matters (and Why Shortcuts Cost More Later)

GS1 is the global authority for product and company identification. Retailers rely on GS1 data as the source of truth behind barcodes.

While some third-party sellers claim to offer “GS1 barcodes,” those barcodes:

  • Do not uniquely identify your company as the brand owner
    often fail retailer verification checks
  • Can create serious issues during onboarding or audits
  • Many retailers actively verify barcodes against the GS1 database before allowing products to be sold. If your company isn’t listed as the brand owner:
  • Your product listings can be rejected
  • Your seller account can be suspended
  • You may be forced to relabel inventory

All of that costs far more — in time and money — than doing it correctly from the start.

How I Support Brands as a GS1 Partner

I don’t just help you “get a barcode.” I help you set things up properly, in a way that supports growth.

That includes:

  • Choosing the right GS1 option based on your stage and goals
Implementing GS1 standards correctly from day one
  • Structuring product data for retail and international readiness
  • Aligning barcodes, packaging, and channel strategy
  • Avoiding common mistakes that slow down or block retail expansion

If you’re building a CPG brand and want to move from concept to shelf without unnecessary rework, this is foundational work worth doing right.
